Etude House Precious Mineral Magic Any Cushion Review in Magic Peach

Tuesday, 11 March 2014

The Etude House Magic Any Cushion launched on March 1st and I was one of the lucky few people in the world who got to try it before it launched! There was a large amount of hype surrounding this product and I was so eager to try it, especially as I have never tried any cushion products which seem to be rather trendy nowadays.

The product comes in 3 shades: Magic Pink for pale skin tones to even out and brighten skin, Magic Peach to brighten and whiten skin tones, and Magic Mint to normalize redness. I was sent the the shade Magic Peach.

The base contains SPF 34 and claims to 'make skin transparent and bright with a lovely magic base color that covers imperfections of any skin type'. To clear up any confusion, this product is actually meant to be used before BB cream as I found out from the survey I had to complete for Etude House.

The packaging is super sweet and girly as per anything from Etude House. It has a nice weight to it and the packaging is well made and sturdy.

It comes with a pink sponge that is quite stiff and dense. Application seems simple enough, push the sponge into the cushion and then tap onto your face, not hard right?

Well I was wrong. Application is quite time consuming and takes me at least 2 minutes to tap the product all over my face. It is quite hard to blend as the sponge leaves its mark on the skin so you really need to keep tapping for smooth coverage. I found the texture to be extremely moisturizing to the point where it felt heavy, perhaps this is because I usually only use BB cream with no primer/base? Despite the heavy moisturizing properties, I found that it emphasizes my dry skin and clings to flakes whilst giving me a dewy look. Incredibly strange. This does not improve when I apply BB cream over the top and my skin feels tacky when touched.

I have tanned, yellow skin around a NC35. This shade is far too light for me to wear by itself. Coverage wise, this product is light to medium and will not cover scars or acne. Another concern I have is the amount- I just can't see that cushion holding a ton of product!

Despite my sub par experience, I must say that the scent is very pleasant and smells almost exactly like Etude House's Collagen Moistfull Essence in Base.

Before: No skin makeup.
After: I look pasty and shiny. I feel like I look better in the Before photo, which is never a good sign.
After my favorite BB cream.
As you can see in the above photo (sorry if it scared you), the product emphasizes my dry skin, making me look cakey! My skin definitely does not look like this normally, or with BB cream only. Furthermore, whenever I wear this product it feels like I am wearing heavy makeup and I feel greasy and can't wait to take off my makeup.

Overall
I really wanted to like this product and I felt so honored to be able to try it first but I simply cannot recommend it. I feel that it is too dewy and moisturizing for oily skin, yet my experience tells me that it is unsuitable for my dry skin. I did write in to Etude House and conveyed my experience, hopefully they will find my input useful! If you have normal skin that is fair, blemish free and you are wanting a dewy base, then maybe this product will be for you. You can find this product on Cosmetic Love here for $27.45.

  1. I thought that I liked the petite baby choux for a long time until I realized that despite the oil control it was making my skin look cakey and powdery. Thank you for reviewing this very honestly Kim! I was considering trying this if it didn't make me cakey like the regular choux, but it sounds like this wasn't really improved. Also, I so agree with you--cushions don't seem like they can hold very much so IMO they're a waste of money.

    1. Thank you so much, I try to be as honest as I can! Every single other review of this product is dripping with praise, I seem to be the only one so far who didn't like it :(

  2. Aww it's too bad that this didn't work for you. :( It worked okay on my skin and didn't get cakey, although it did make me look a bit like a ghost because of it's brightening function.
Thanks for dropping by my blog and commenting so that I could read other views on the Magic Any Cushion! :)

    1. I'm glad it worked for you and so many others! Maybe I just have finicky skin :( plus being tanned is always a bummer when it comes to asian makeup. No problem, I'm always curious to see what others thought of the same product!

    1. Thank you so much! I will go and check out your blog now :) unfortunately it is still too pale for me, if it matched better I wouldn't have minded it so much. That's what I get for being tanned :P

    1. As I said in the review, I have dry skin and this product was very moisturising but made me look cakey because it emphasised my flakey skin. If you have fair skin I would say it can be worn on its own :) I have tanned skin so I had to use a bb cream over the top!
