Etude House Golden Ratio Face Glam Review

Friday, 4 April 2014

This one's been a long time coming seeing as I got this product on my Japan travels during December! Whilst browsing at Etude House the unique box caught my eye- This is not the typical Etude House's cutesy, princessy packaging but more akin to Benefit's quirky, retro packaging.

The idea of this product is to highlight your face in accordance to the age old rule- the golden ratio or rule of thirds. It contains 2 products, a cream eye brightener and a liquid highlight to accentuate your features according to 'ideal proportions'. Well, highlighting can definitely help to add dimension to the face, not sure about helping you achieve the golden ratio though! The product comes in #1 Gold and #2 Pink, today you are seeing the gold version.

The actual product is nowhere near as pretty as the shiny golden box. Something about the off yellow color and font makes it look cheap.

The top flips open and contains the eye brightener with a small mirror which I appreciate. The lid snaps open and closed nicely and feels quite secure.

The liquid section on the other hand, leaves much to be desired. The top twists off to reveal a rather large opening which is neither practical nor secure. When I unpacked this product from my suitcase, a copious amount of highlighter had leaked out despite the lid being screwed on tightly- you can see the reminants in the above picture. The paddle is really large and picks up far too much product and is messy to work with as you need to scrape it on the side of the opening and then swipe it across your face.

The eye brightener is swatched on the left and has a strange, greasy, thin texture that does not blend well on the eyes. The highlighter looks promising in the thick swatch- like a rich molten gold, however blends out to almost nothing on the face!

I used the eye brightener on the eyelid and under eye where it creased immediately. I never have problems with eye shadows or concealers creasing on my dry skin so I was quite surprised! You can see the creasing under my eye above which was taken immediately after application.

I tapped a copious amount of the liquid highlighter on my cheekbones where it blended out to well... almost nothing. It gave my skin a slightly 'wet' look with a slight golden sheen. Personally, if I wear highlighter, I want that high beam, super glowy Kim Kardashian look! These photos are the result of turning my head at every angle trying to catch any color or shine given off by the highlighter- these photos best showed the maximal effects of the product.

This product left much to be desired. The messy and unattractive packaging, dud eye brightener and mild highlighting effects did not do it for me. I would not recommend this product- you can easily find better highlighters out there that pack more of a punch plus come with prettier and more convenient packaging! You can find this product for $15.25 on Cosmetic Love.

  1. You should try topshop glow! it gives a lovely glow to the skin or benefit high beam! although they probably won't be as cheap as this product.. Great review! xx

    1. Thank you for your comment! I really should try something from benefit and the high beam is probably a good place to start. Unfortunately we don't have topshop here, but I believe I'm getting a skin food highlighter in the next month from cosmetic love so hopefully I'll have better luck! :P

  2. That's so annoying! Sorry to hear about your experience with this product. :( My favorite liquid highlighters are the BECCA SSP in Opal and the too cool for school Dinoplatz illuminator (this is Korean, too! hehe). Hope you find a product that works better for you!

  4. thanks for blogging about this one! Not having seen many reviews for it, I was hesitant to try it. Maybe that's why no one has reviewed it before? :P Doesn't look so great hahaha.

    1. I have missed your posts and comments, I'm glad you're back online! :D Don't bother trying this one unless you want a super subtle effect. I like my make up to be er... visible (lol) or none at all!
