Burt's Bees Radiance Cleanser with Royal Jelly Review

Monday, 2 June 2014

When I received this along with my Burt's Bees tinted lip balm, I was really excited to use it because I hadn't seen Burt's Bees skincare products before. Turns out I wasn't looking very hard because they're quite readily available at Priceline and David Jones (lol).

"This light lotion cleanser removes dirt, oil and make-up, revealing a smooth and radiant complexion. A gentle plant-based cleansing complex plus jojoba beads and a fruit acid complex help encourage normal skin cell turnover. While royal jelly, one of nature’s most nutritious substances, helps enhance skin’s natural radiance. Your skin appears brighter and younger-looking, naturally."- Burt's Bees website

This is exactly the type of packaging I look for in a facial cleanser. Thin so it will fit on my wire shower rack with a handy pump dispenser! I also am very drawn to the design of the label and bottle, and find the yellow and grey color scheme and the beehive illustration very appealing. Thumbs up for the functional and attractive packaging.

The first thing I noticed about the cleanser was the smell. Unfortunately I have to say I hate it. It's an overpowering scent that I have real trouble describing- it's somewhat floral and very heady and it makes me nauseas. I have a sensitive nose, so to be fair to the product I asked my sister and boyfriend to use it and tell me their thoughts: my sister had the same 'awful!' reaction as me and my boyfriend said he didn't like it.

The texture is akin to a lotion- thin and creamy. When mixed with water it does not lather, it becomes like a smooth, watery gel that slides across the skin.

I tried using it (whilst holding my breath to avoid the smell) twice over to see whether it would remove the day's makeup. It didn't fully remove my base makeup, which is quite light, and left most of my waterproof eye makeup on my face. I tried out this product at night over 4 days and found that in the time it took to get out of the shower, dry myself and shuffle to my bedroom, my skin turned red and tight with flakes (to my horror) covering my forehead and cheeks. All within 1 minute of leaving the shower! My skin is dry but it never flakes within that short amount of time.

My skin and nose really did not like this cleanser. Although it didn't claim to be a hydrating cleanser, I found it far too drying on my sensitive skin. It's a real shame because I had high hopes for this product- but who knows, maybe this was a bad batch? Or maybe I am allergic?

Thank you for reading about my honest experience with this product, and thank you to Burt's Bees for sending this to me for consideration. Ahh, I hate writing negative reviews but I can't lie...
