e.l.f Makeup Mist & Set Review and Demo
Wednesday, 9 December 2015
I have dry, flaky skin that looks worse with powder and is prone to looking thick, dry and cakey as the day wears on. I have been wanting to try a makeup setting spray forever but never really researched any because I have had virtually no time for anything this year (final year of uni problems). On a rare trip to Kmart, I spied the e.l.f section and saw they had a cheap setting spray available. I actually paid $8AUD for this spray and I know all you guys in the US are probably cringing because you can get the same product for less than half the price over there!
"Wish you could have a product for your makeup like Hairspray is for your hair? Well…keep your makeup staying in place all day with a radiance boosting invisible hold with our new Makeup Mist & Set. The invigorating mist moisturizes and soothes the skin with key ingredients Aloe, Green Tea, Cucumber and Vitamins A, C & E. The lightweight, comfortable and alcohol free formula improves makeup wearability and prevents color from running or fading."
Ingredients: Water (Aqua), AMP-Acrylates/Allyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Propylene Glycol, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Green Tea (Camelia Sinensis) Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vc), Tocophryl Acetate (Ve) Retinyl Acytate (Va), Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben.
Granted, the ingredients list is not appealing, but for the price...
The packaging is fairly cheap and light, however it is very portable to carry with you in your handbag. The spray nozzle shoots out a fine mist that covers my face fairly evenly and for someone who hasn't dabbled in setting spays before, I find it super enjoyable to spritz this all over! One thing that gets to me is the smell. I wish it smelt like aloe, green tea and cucumbers but the more I use it, the more unpleasant the smell gets! The only thing I can relate the smell to is garbage (it's not THAT unpleasant, but definitely garbage notes haha), so now I just hold my breath.
Freshly applied foundation and powder. See how my skin already looks cakey around my mouth?
I use 6-8 sprays all over my face which is a bit excessive, but you can see the cakiness has reduced. I was actually wondering whether I would get the same result with a fine mist of water but that is an experiment for another day.
The fine lines on my forehead disappear after the extra hydration sinks in.
As my face dries it does not get taut and I feel that the spray does add a layer of hydration over the top of my makeup. I expected it to change the texture of my base like adding a thin layer of dried glue over the surface but my skin still looked and felt like skin. In terms of setting my makeup, this product is not effective. In the Summer heat my T Zone still got shiny in the same amount of time as usual. However it is an excellent tool to combat cakiness throughout the day. Yesterday I had my makeup on for a whopping 14 hours and 2 uses of this mist right before different events saved my skin from looking like a prune I tried (and failed) to cover with BB cream.
Long story short, this product is a good option to hydrate dry, cakey skin, but it does NOT set your makeup or make it last longer.
Overall, I'm really happy I picked up this mist and am now obsessed! I don't think I can go a day without using this to finish off my powdery face. I don't think I would repurchase this one because of the smell though.
Do you guys have a makeup mist to recommend to me? Not necessarily a setting spray, but something that can be used to refresh makeup?
You can buy this product from selected Kmart stores or online from the e.l.f Australia website.
