x-23 Cosplay Progress part 1

Sunday, 3 January 2016

Ah my first cosplay post of 2016 and the start of many more to come! Wolverine is one of my favourite X-Men (I have lots of love for Hugh Jackman), so it made sense to cosplay his female clone! X-23/Laura Kinney is a lesser known Marvel character because she hasn't appeared in any movies. Her back story is tragic and dark and considering the success of Jessica Jones and Daredevil, I can totally see an X-23 series coming out in the future!

"Cloned from a damaged copy of Wolverine's genome, X-23 was created to be the perfect killing machine. For years, she proved herself a capable assassin working for an organization called the Facility. A series of tragedies eventually led her to Wolverine and the X-Men. She attends school at the X-Mansion, and eventually became a member of X-Force."- Read the Wiki if you want more information!

Laura is super badass and she can fight. I always choose to cosplay strong female characters who have combat skills, so the decision was a no-brainer!

After researching more, I was fairly taken with her story, however I wasn't impressed with her costuming. I get that wearing a bra top and leggings allows for freedom of movement in combat, but it's not very tasteful and is very simple. Most of the X-23 cosplays on the net seem to be sexy girls with big boobs (I may or may not be jealous!) wearing store bought leggings and bras which does convey a likeness to X-23, but is not really to my personal taste. Especially because I'm flat chested haha. But then I cast my gaze upon this amazing fan art by LeeJJ on Deviantart!

I love all the little details such as the buckles across the bottom of the crop top and the lace up gloves. It's still sexy, but way more badass! I took inspiration from this artwork plus some other female superheroes. I personally love high necked tops because they hide my chest, plus they give off that superhero vibe! My design includes lace up gloves, studded elbow pads, wrist guards and buckle details over the leggings.

I decided to forgo the flat, gothic military boots because considering my height (162cm), they will likely 'cut off' my legs, making me appear shorter and chunkier. I'm going to go with heeled ankle boots to add some height and hope that the buckles strapped across my calves will have a similar effect to the boots! Here is the design I settled on:

I attempted to 'colour in' using the brush tool and my mouse haha. It's terrible, I'm sorry!

So far I have made the top which was an absolute nightmare. It looks so simple, but it took me hours of redoing and unpicking seams to get it to fit my body the way I wanted. This was also the first time I installed an invisible zip which took 5 attempts! I just could get my head around it! Another problem were the buckles. I wanted to make them from scratch, but it is seriously so difficult to locate plain belt buckles on their own! I ended up buying studding dog collars online instead which was disappointing because I prefer to make things!

However, I also ended up with store bought leggings and the X-men belt. May as well buy the items that happen to be made the exact way you want to save some trouble. My claws are also going to be made my a prop maker because I don't have the equipment to make them to the standard I want.

Above are my finished corset gloves, elbow pads and wrist cuffs. I made the silver pendant out of craft foam and am still deciding whether I should use it or not.

Now I have a question for you! Which X-men character would you be?
