COSRX Blackhead Power Liquid Rave Review

Monday, 14 March 2016

Hey all! This is a product I have been meaning to review for ages as it has become an absolute must-have in my skincare routine. And it's not often I say that! You guys know I have been having horrible skin issues since I went off the Pill, you can see photos of my congested skin condition over here: Part 1Part 2.

I bought my first bottle of the COSRX Blackhead Power Liquid from Wishtrend after reading some great reviews from other bloggers. My main skin concern is blackheads and clogged pores, so I needed a product that contained BHA aka salicylic acid.

FYI:
AHA's primarily exfoliate the surface layers of dead skin and is best used to treat sun damage.
BHA/salicylic acid penetrates deeper into the pores and are used to treat acne-prone skin, blackheads, enlarged pores, and milia. Can be drying.

I really love the simple black and white frosted bottle with a pump top. Effective and hygienic with no frills!

The liquid contains 4% BHA which is higher than the usual 1-2% in other salicylic acid products. Depending on how sensitive your skin is, you may need to work your way up to using a 4% liquid. My skin can be allergy prone, but it is also quite resilient so using this product twice a day was fine for me!

The ingredients list is refreshing short: Salix alba (willow) bark water, butylene glycol, betaine salicylate (4%), niacinamide, 1,2-hexanediol, arginine, panthenol, sodium hyaluronate, xanthan gum, ethyl hexanediol. pH: 4.0

All of these ingredients are considered safe according to CosDNA.

The liquid is clear and only slightly thicker than water with a 'slippery' sort of texture. It spreads over the skin really easily and dries quickly in a layer over my skin. I am always wary of BHA products because they dry out my already dry skin type soooo much, but this product is amazingly hydrating considering the 'thinness' of the liquid! After washing my face, I dispense two pumps of the product in my palms and rub them together before rubbing it all over my face and neck.

I have to say the smell is not pleasant- to me it smells faintly of vomit (I know), but it's withstandable and worth it.

It took around a month of diligent twice a day application for me to see results. My clogged pores improved so much and this product really prevented new clogs from forming. Case in point: I finished my first bottle when I was in holiday in Singapore and I was left without my power liquid for 2 weeks. I actually purchased another BHA product to make up for it: Mentholatum Acnes Medicated Powder Lotion in Singapore which dried out my skin so much and wreaked absolute havoc on my face! In 2 weeks, all my progress over the past year was undone and blackheads were forming all over my forehead, nose and chin right before my eyes. I couldn't purchase another bottle of the power liquid fast enough- in fact I bought 2 bottles!

This photo was taken 1 year ago (2015) from one of my blog posts. I remember I actually smoothed over my skin in Pixelmator because I was so embarrassed. My forehead was super clogged and bumpy to the touch- I'm not sure whether you can see the pores as I was using my old camera which didn't have a good macro function. I swear every single pore on my forehead was clogged :(.

This is my forehead now as it recovers from that awful 2 week stint of torture. There are still some very small bumps, but the texture of my skin has improved so much already. It's brighter and looks clean and even! I may just be imagining it, but my pores look much smaller too. It can only improve with time too. I don't expect my forehead to ever be completely clear because of my skin type and the fact that I wear makeup every day, but this product sure helps to lessen the damage.

Overall, this product is a must have for my congested, dry skin. It helps to keep my pores clean without drying them out. I couldn't ask for anything more and this is the single most effective BHA containing product I have ever tried and I highly, highly recommend it.

Did I mention it's extremely affordable too?! I always buy mine from Wishtrend- get the COSRX Blackhead Power Liquid for $17.85 USD. To get free shipping I always throw in one of Wishtrend's Free Shipping items. I got the famous C20 Vitamin C serum last time!

Do you use a BHA or AHA? Tell me which one you use please!

*I bought this product with my own money. All my opinions are 100% honest.
