I'm getting Abs! My experience with Intermittent Fasting and Bulletproof Coffee
Sunday, 19 June 2016
I would like to turn my blog away from beauty product reviews and incorporate more health and lifestyle posts. My definition of beauty has changed quite recently. I believe health is the single most important aspect of life. When I don't feel good, I am basically Mrs grumpy pants and it affects everyone around me. When I'm healthy, I feel great and I'm happy and in turn, that helps the people around me. You get back what you put out!
So my first 'diet' (I don't like to think of it as diet. Lifestyle perhaps?) post is going to be on Bulletproof Coffee and intermittent fasting. Today actually marks the end of my first two weeks of this method and the results have been achieved rapidly. Here are basics of my eating schedule:
Morning: A bulletproof coffee.
2pm: Start eating.
8pm: Stop eating.
The research on the benefits of intermittent fasting is overwhelming. This is a good resource if you want to do some further reading. Basically when you don’t eat for a while, your body initiates important cellular repair processes and changes hormone levels to make stored body fat more accessible for you to burn baby burn.
Blood insulin levels drop and growth hormone surges which facilitates fat burning.
You tend to eat fewer meals when you're fasting.
It increases your metabolic rate.
Fasting can reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation plays a role in many common diseases!
There are heaps more benefits if you care to look them up, but what makes the most sense to me is that when your body isn't focussed on digesting, it can direct energy to other processes and organs, such as your brain. The biggest benefit for me has been the clarity I feel in the mornings which has made me super productive!
Bulletproof Coffee- a hack for fasting
I heard about Dave Asprey's Bulletproof coffee in 2015 from some fellow experimental health friends, but I hadn't tried it until now. Bulletproof coffee, in essence, is a long black coffee blended with good fat. This serves the purpose of waking you up in the mornings and keeping you full until you break your fast in the afternoon. If you have a read on the interwebs, there are arguments for and against BP coffee, with Asprey saying that consuming fat does not break your fast, whereas others say that ANY calorie you consume will break your fast. I don't claim to know what is right and wrong, but I know what works for me, and bulletproof coffee works. I can't go without it AND fast otherwise I get terribly hangry and crash.
Here's my snapchat story (ID: Kimmimod) showing how I make my coffee with an Aeropress.
How I make it
1 cup brewed organic coffee
(I actually buy green organic beans and roast them myself in a popcorn maker)
1 teaspoon organic coconut oil
1 teaspoon grass fed organic butter
Optional: Coconut cream (I use this when I run out of coconut oil)
I then blitz everything up in my nutribullet, reheat, then enjoy!
The original recipe can be found here. I don't use any of Asprey's products or use as much fat as he does because I can't afford it. That being said, on work mornings where I leave the house at 6:30am and have a much longer time period to fast, I double the amount of coconut oil and butter to keep me going for longer.
I must mention that the taste of fatty coffee is divine. It's so creamy and satisfying! When I go to bed at night, I am already looking forward to my coffee in the morning.
2 weeks ago I had a little two pack. Now I can almost see all 6! I'm leaner, more energised and feel amazing. These photos are all unedited by the way. Furthermore I haven't been doing ANY core exercises. More on that in another post.
